Modular Spews.

I love modular, and most of its talented lineup. I would say that it would be hard to go to any electro/indie/blog house club nights and not hear atleast 5 tunes produced/written/remixed by the artists on their roster. These are artists who are constantly touring/gigging/dj-ing around the globe, even their cd sales are quite strong for such a small label.

It is with this mindset that it shocks me that a label with this strength on it's roster has apparently lost 5.9 million dollars in the last year (according to inthemix.com.au). I hope that this is somehow false. I know that we post lots of mp3's up, but myself and alot of others passionate about some of the modular artists purchase their cd's legitimately.

Nearly 6 million dollars is a fucking lot of money to lose in a year, and according to ITM, it isn't their first year of losses , they apparently lost $1.8 million in 2007 and $2.6 million in 2006. Did daft punk charge too much when modular helped organise nevernever land? Lets hope they have spent lots of money on recording records and they will sell really well and tour lots. Either that or Universal Music being one of their half owners, will not let them continue down this slippery slope.

Maybe they need to kick the shit out of the avalanches and get them to release their sophomore record, then we can all have a sexy party?

Here is a van she tech remix of a pretty classic Utah Saints track. What will van she do if they don't have a label? Join ajax's label haha?

tradehooks, the blog that is the blog that blogs about the blog worth blogging about

As more and more ads appear on HRO i wonder how much he's making now. Couple ads from AA, one from Pedestrian and little ads for more ads to be added. HRO went off on this alt-culture tangent for so long i started to forget it was a music blog, i wonder what Carles' REAL job is, or can he say (since he's making money from it) that he's a blogger and that IS his job?
It's true what he says, HRO is a blog worth blogging about.

I also have a hunch, Bonds is going to turn into an Australian version of AA. All they need to do is get a white backdrop and some new genericly hot looking models.

Foreshore 2008, Time to Compare

Foreshore is practically the Capital's biggest music festival, the others are Stonefest and that one at the racecourse. Both which are normally headlined by Canberra favourite sons Koolism.

Anywho, Foreshore is held on Canberra’s Commonwealth Place one of the best situated dance festival venues in Australia if not the world.

2007s lineup was

Sneaky Sound System (DJ/Live)
Fedde Le Grand
Muscles (Live)
Switch (UK)
Kid Kenobi & MC Shureshock
Jeff Drake
The Midnight Juggernauts
(The 3 in bold being great acts, worth paying for)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is 2008s lineup

The Presets (Live)
The Galvatrons (Live)
Nick Warren (‘Way Out West, UK)
16 Bit Lolitas (Holland)
Skool Of Thought (UK)
Kazu Kimura (Japan)
Mission Control (Live)
Doom & Hoodrat (Bang Gang)
The Stafford Brothers

Bass Kleph (Helium, Vacation Records)
Axe Aklins (Live)

(The ones in bold are the ones I would pay to see, I'm extremely keen to see the Stafford Bros, my favourite Australian DJ duo, and Axe Aklins ('Belconnens favourite son',(I lived there for a month, not something I would be claiming)), that big guy who tries to rap with MC Hau in Koolism). All my memories of Axe are of him in this crouch stance, but normally pointing at Hau.
I hope this lineup gets better. And as we all know, tradehooks believes that a festival lineup must have French artists, and the more there are, the better the rating

Current tradehooks rating - 0/11 French Baguettes

Tradehooks Appreciates the finer things in Life.

Busy Pac Shakur P

Here at the Tradehooks offices we are great proponents of the arts, we have many rare watercolours hanging.

So-Me has recently (during March and May) had an exhibition at the STUDIO gallery in Toronto. The paintings were all portraits, many of Busy P, the justice crew, some M&M's, and many other Ed Banger graphic-esque type of things. The common feature is that they all feature Busy P. Apparently it started out as simply a show of portraits and transformed into the exhibition you can see through the link below.

As you may know, So-Me is the graphic designer behind all Ed Banger releases. He does some cool shit, that cannot be argued. Wait no thats a lie..

Limited edition, numbered and signed prints are $700.

Non-Limited, Non signed ones on shitty paper go for $60.

The Ed Banger M&M

And before the barrage of Ed Banger haters come out of the wood work, they make some cool tracks, and the prints in my opinion are very good.

Check it out on Studio's Webpage

What do you think?

Would you buy a non limited, non signed print for $60 bucks?

Can you only charge $700 bucks for a print if your friends with busy P and Justice?

Should tradehooks have an exhibition?

Or, are all of the pieces the same shitty pictures of a Long-Haired french dude who is only famous because he was lucky enough to meet daft punk at a club night when he was 21, and ride their coat tails to electro heaven?

party pics

Another day, another party at Diddys, seriously

how much do you think Aoki pays the Cobra Snake to take pix at his parties? if you aren't getting paid to take party pics are you just a prvrt/ghey?
should haters be party pix photographers?
i read somewhere once that the evolution of the party pix photographer comes from taking pictures of cool people at partys, and posting them, so that other cool people would follow them to the next party. is there party pic photographers who take pics of the uncool people? or at least of the people who look uncool but actually are?
if there is a shit club who get 3-5 alt-looking-mainstream-bros/hos a nite and the party photographer only takes pics of only them is that cool? or are they trying too hard, and are we the clubbers getting the raw end of the deal?
if there are not enough good looking people in a club to take photos of, is it ok to take no-flash/slow shutter pics of a CDJ-1000s or is that lame?

I am one tradehooker looking forward to the release of Van She's Debut Album out August 8. Pre Order Here.

We have already heard "Strangers" and now comes the single "Changes" from their new album and later to be released "Exchanges" (not really but would suit). Will Van She Tech remix this one? i reckon its weird how they remix their own tracks.

Dizzee does the ting tings.

No everyone's favourite grime rapper hasn't tasted the pleasures of that hot chick from the ting tings (atleast to the knowledge of the staffers at tradehooks.)

Dizzee has covered The Ting Tings catchy and heavily overplayed (thanks JJJ) track That's Not My Name. He has added a serious edge too it, attacking rascism. WOW.I particularly like adaptation of the lyrics, from the alt chick stacey, to the edgy hip hoper Dizzee (aka Bla, Rudebowy, Oi, Mate, Myu,)

Is it weird that calvin harris has completed a top remix of great dj by the ting tings and produced a track for dizzee.  Dizzee Rascal Ft Calvin Harris and Chrome - Dance Wiv Me

Is there an axis of evil? Headed by a scottish electro star? Me thinks probably no. But there could be.

Dizzee is playing at Parklifes. Around the country. Tickets go onsale on thursday, should we go? Im still unsure. Ok lineup, but nearly $150.

One music video worth watching

I really haven't watched any of the videos for the video clip contest that Radiohead put on, all i know is that i think this is really really cool. Definitely watch.
Edit: I realised most will stop watchin after about 10 seconds, the song sounds like it starts about 1:30 (the vocals anyway).

Big Ideas (don't get any) from James Houston on Vimeo.

Crookers- Winners of tradehooks 2008 Best Remixer Poll

Crookers have won tradehooks 2008 so far best remixer with 13% of the vote.

Other notable achievers were
Justice and Spook with 9% of the vote respectively
SebastiAn, The Twelves and Boys Noize with 6% each
And Breakbot with 2%

I've never played a Crookers Remix live before, though I do have their Remix of Protect and Entertain by Busy P and Murs on my playlist, but thats it. I thought their remix of Salmon Dance absolutely destroyed an almost perfect Hip Hop/Dance Collab.

Here is a small bunch of Crookers Remixes and Originals

Mad Kids- Crookers
To Protect and Entertain (Crookers Remix)- Busy P Feat MC Murs
Salmon Dance (Crookers remix)- Chemical Brothers

The Crow- Crookers Feat Boy 8-Bit
Voglio Solo Action Figures (Young Live Edit)- Cool Kids X Crookers
