Splendour In My Ass - More Rumours

So i'm getting a bit excited for Splendour in the Grass this year. In The Mix posted the other day that the festival will be held once again in Belongil Fields in Byron Bay, despite the rumours of it moving.

The dates are Saturday August 2nd and Sunday August 3rd.

Now as mentioned before the lineup for Splendour often looks somewhat similar in parts to what goes for the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, the full lineup for it has now been released featuring:
Coldplay
The Verve
The Sex Pistols
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Panic At The Disco
Justice
Band Of Horses
The Wombats
New Young Pony Club
The Prodigy
311
The Fratellis
Maximum The Hormone
Zebra Head
Beat Union
Fatboy Slim
Alicia Keys
Paul Weller
Devo
Junkie XL
Spiritualized
The Lost Prophets

Bedouin Soundclash
Mutemath
MGMT
Jack’s Mannequin
Cajuan Dance Party
Crystal Castles
The Hooisers

New Found Glory
We Smoke Fags
Trivium
The Subways

That lineup would go alright i guess.

Shameless Self Promotion Saturday.

Well its that time of the week again (i.e. Saturday) ... the good people over at Palms Out Sounds do remix sunday, but as per usual we like to keep things interesting at Trade Hooks.

As im sure you would have heard by now... Dj Selecta and gigz. have been hard at work... The result has been described as

"the best bangers and mash mix to date"  selecta

"Better than that time we played a soul house set in ibiza" gigz.

"Like a gnome having sweet sweet gnome sex with your ears" Ed Banger

The mix tape miraculously occurred when Selecta and gigz combined their skills during their recent trip to france:

Cut Chemist in Juno

Saw Juno yesterday, the amazing 2007 Jason Reitman film about teenage pregnancy and true love. In one of the early scenes some of the main characters are at school in a chemistry class, and who is the only chemist I want as my chemistry teacher, CUT CHEMIST

Notice the Cut Chemist logos on the board and setup in front of him. Man I love him, if you havent got tickets to the Hard Sell yet, hurry the fuck up Moshtix

On another note, the Juno soundtrack is unbelievable. Songs by the Moldy Peaches, the Kinks and Barry Louis Polisar are my personal favourites, Im not giving any links to them coz you gotta buy the whole album from Amazon.com

Sneakerology 101.

Thats right kids Pennsylvania's Carnegie University is the first campus ever to introduce a course entirely based upon sneakers, their history and design.

This is a university level course dealing with sneaker culture on the whole. Ranging from its roots in the 70s basketball to its shaping by hip-hop and the internet among other factors, the course covers the overall impact of sneakers on a worldwide level. The class utilizes Bobbito Garcia's Where'd You Get Those? for reference as well as various sneaker-based websites. Evaluations include a mid-term project pertaining to the design of a sneaker, incorporating elements acquired along the way. Interested parties can sign up for the class' next session set for Spring of 2009.

Splendour in my Ass

No. Im not talking about that movie Selecta made back in 06'. Splendour in the Grass is on again this year folks rumoured to be on the 2nd and 3rd of August. They bought a massive site outside of byron bay, everything was going to be sweet, enough camping room for all, sadly however the dirty, vegie eating, dirty haired, bong guzzling hippies, that inhabit the surrounding areas protested and thus it is back at the old site again this year. So it will be harder to get a ticket than a new kidney once again this year.

Over the last few years it has become apparent that many of the acts playing at Fuji Rock festival in Japan come down to Byron, as it is typically a week or 2 prior to Splendour. The fuji lineup has come out and some of the acts are listed on Inthemix.

Other rumours include Radiohead and Hotchip.

Full details will be revealed by Splendour on March 25.

Bananaz

Bananaz is film created by Ceri Levy and is the first behind-the-scenes look into the creators behind the virtual band.

"
Bananaz is the take-no-prisoners tale of the Gorillaz project, from the magic of the first drawings to the mystery of the last video; taking in every live performance, studio situation and awards show in the process. Russel, Noodle, Murdoc and 2D finally step aside to give De La Soul, Dennis Hopper, Ibrahim Ferrer, Jamie Hewlett, Damon Albarn and friends their moment in the sun. Filmed on hand-held camera by Gorillaz’ associate Ceri Levy, it’s the ultimate reality show and a must-see for Gorillaz fans the world over." (Bananazfilm.com)

It showed on the 12th and 15th of this month in Texas at the SXSW Film Festival, and hopefully is making its way around the world.
It's not yet available on dvd or anything like that, so i guess we will just have to be patient.

For a song for this post, a favourite El Mañana - Gorillaz

Vampire Weekend

If you have not listened to this band, DO IT!!!!

The big track at the moment, One (Blake's Got a New Face) has been getting the ass played out of it on triple J in recent times, and it made me want to buy the album. The album is solid start to finish and as tight as a young boys ****, with musical highlights including One, A-Punk, The Kids don't stand a Chance and Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.

Have a listen to A-punk by Vampire Weekend
And buy it at Amazon.com

Swedish Electro: Maskinen

On the back of selecta's educational post about french hip hop.. i thought i would delve into the world of Swedish Dirty Beats. We all know that swedish chicks are probably some of the hottest women in the world, but i was under the impression that in that country the beats were nice and clean... lots of house (Axwell, Swedish House Mafia etc.)

Maskinen on the other hand certainly drop it like its hot, and they are hell weird to boot. Their new track is called "Everyone Who is Not Dancing is a Rapist". They are in hot water because of the offensive nature of their tunes and as of yet have never performed live in their own country. But the track is tight. Give it a listen.

French Hip Hop- IAM

French people are good at most things. Baking, electro house, love making, being arrogant etc.

But few people know there is a pretty fucking good hip hop scene there. Now I'm no expert on French Hip Hop, but the crew I have heard most about are called IAM, and I'm not talking about the Institute of Asset Management, rather the crew from Marseilles 'Invasion Arrivée de Mars'(Invasion from Mars).

They released seven albums, got signed to Virgin in 1990, and their album L'école du micro d'argent also got them some international reps. They performed at Reading festival in England which increased not only their own popularity but that of French Hip Hop.

IAM- Petit Frere Highly recommended

PNAU on Tour

Pic by Daniel Boud, at PNAU Homebake, Sydney 2007

After G-skillz and Selecta talked today about the future, we came to an agreement that in 2008 PNAU might be the most popular and talked about band in the world. Who knows?
Well I checked the Economists' Guide to 2008, one of the most trusted future telling magazines in the world, and it didn't mention PNAU anywhere, which i thought was strange seeing as I paid $25 for it, and I'm always right.

Thomas Bangalter Track?

This track was left as comments on about 10 of the major blogs yesterday, by a blogger by the name of 'tb'. Now this could really be anybody, just trying to get their song into the blogosphere. But have a listen, its hard to deny that strong Daft Punk, french electro sound, that would be unbelievably hard to recreate in such perfection.

So if this is Thomas Bangalter, he has a banger.

This is the original link he provided so get in soon

DVNO Video Released

Justice - DVNO

Selecta Junior does like his Justice, especially at the moment DVNO (otherwise known as 'track 9') and luckily enough Justice decided to release their video for DVNO, and its incredible. The video directed by So-Me who also animated the video for D.A.N.C.E. features members Xavier De Rosnay and Gaspard Augé playing piano at the end.

Soooo, what the hell does DVNO mean? Well according to de Rosnay it simply means "Divino" as he says "In every suburb of the world, in every city, there's always a nightclub called El Divino... Clubs where you have to wear like a white shirt to get in."

The vocals in the song are done by Mehdi Pinson from the band Scenario Rock.

Save the World By Knowing a Word

So check this, we at hooks for grammys are usually here to save your souls, not ultimately to save the world. but i came across this site today that has been making waves all over the world with an amazing idea.

so what happens is you go to www.freerice.com and you are given a word, and then a list of four other words, the you gotta click on the word that best defines the word at the top. eg:

Haze means:
# fog
# rowdiness
# supplement
# impostor

The answer being fog, so you click on it and it donates 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program, and you can keep playing forever if you wish till you save the entire world from starvation.

So how do they do it? FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice and you are earning it 20 grains at a time. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.
