Liberteen Ranch

Another month another ranch. Those crazy boys from the Ranch House are at it again, with another cracker of a lineup this month. Once again its at Castros, but its on a Saturday night, primetime. So get down there, its the best night in Wollongong if you like music, and I mean good real music. They got bands, DJs, duos, a guy with a computer and too much energy, and the promise of plenty of self inflicted in and around the mouth. Read on, you will soon find out what I mean...

The Jezabels

The Jezabels sound cool. They all go to Sydney Uni. Study Politics and Russian literature apparently, and play at folk festivals. They have a keyboard player, dunno if it is a MoOg or not, but they can call their style indie (coz apparently to be in an indie band you need a synth/keyboard). No but seriously, they sound cool, their sound is indie/rock/pop/folk, and will go down a treat with Ranch dressing on Saturday night.

Sounds like (my opinion only, and I don't usually listen to this style of music):
  • George
  • Kate Bush
  • Lykke Li (but less tech)
  • Goldfrapp if she was in a folk band?
  • Dizzee Rascal if he was white, a chick and in a folk/rock band
  • Indie Cranberries (Mr Thom)
  • Youth Group (jff)
  • Almost Cold War Kids, but with a chick singer (jff)
  • Like if George were Cut Copy, Jezabels would be Van She. Or if George were Van She, Jezabels would be Van She Tech
  • My friend jff also suggests if "someone" and "another person" had a baby the jezabels would've killed that baby and stolen it's sound.
  • He also suggested that if George and cold war kids had a baby then the Jezabels probably killed that baby and drank its soul and then found some songs the baby wrote.
Check out their Jezabels Myspace coz they don't got themselves a website, thats how indie they are.

They are on triplej unearthed as well at the moment, these are mp3 links to the page

Calling In Sick

I dont know what they sound like coz they are too indie to have a website, and they are too indie too have their myspace music, and they didn't send it to us
Calling in Sick Myspace

ToeCutter

I don't think he likes us, I'm pretty sure he is a blog h8er. He never sends us trax so we can promote him, coz we are massive fans, but each artist to their own. But he put on quite the show last time, and he remixes really well. He will be in the same mode as last time, but with ladies on the poles and go go dancers. wey kule!

DJ Rainbow Ejaculation

Is one crazy mofo. Strong acquaintance of toecutter, they toured Japan years ago, and I have seen video footage. They were nuts, I juts don't get it.

Anyway this is his Website, if you are affected by images of penises and or strong flashing lights do not visit this site. Checkout the videos on the bottom of this page, well worth it

Justice Yeldham

This guy must be seen to be believed. His description line on his myspace says "crossing the line between music and bloodsport!" so yeh, um.

This is what his mySpace says

What’s been described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" is in fact the unique audio work of Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. By pressing his face and lips against the glass whist employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries, he turns disguarded household windows into crude musical instruments. Resulting in a wide variety of cacophonous noises that are strangely controlled and oddly musical.

A video of one of Justice's Performances

Get down to the Ranch on Saturday night, at Castros. It's the best night in Wollongong music, fuck everywhere else. I'm DJing at the Brewhouse, don't come down. Go to the ranch, its too much fun. onefiveone have got the usual pigeons on, so go to the Ranch. maybe one day when I grow I'll get a set at the Ranch, and we can all have fun. Entry is $15 and if ur on the doorlist its $10

spook, one of our biggest fans, is playing too. After being asked what his set would be, spook informed tradehooks that "you are douche bag you do realise that". I'm not sure how to take that, but I'm guessing that means he has a highly original set with plenty of pre-releases that he can't tell us about, and that calling us a "douche-bag" is refering to that he was appalled that we even asked us to expose anything about his set. MAJOR HYPE

DMCA rhymes with I Am So Gay

For those of you that haven't heard of the DMCA, it flows like this:
"It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as Digital Rights Management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works and it also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself."
Or in other words, hates you and your children.

Anywayz our file host got owned by this thing and most of the recent posts will be useless for a while.

Maybe while you wait for the tracks to be uploaded you can download tradehooks latest mixtape:

in other news, On triplej this morning there was further speculation about the announcement of one more MGMT show in australia when they tour in December.

If the announcement is made it will be tomorrow on triplej breakfast show, and I'm guessing it gonna come true. They are announcing the lineup for the Meredith Music Festival in Victoria

It will soon reveal itself

Conor Oberst - Triple J's Album of the Week

This guy Conor Oberst is getting a bashing on triplej at the moment in Australia. His self titled album is triple j's album of this week, and I like it much. Best known for his work with Bright Eyes, he has created an indie gem with a whole bunch of great trax (his guitars sound awesome). Recorded in a temporary studio in a mountain villa somewhere in sunny Mexico with a rag tag backing band (known as the Mystic Valley Band, who will be touring with Conor) what I have heard has been amazing.
I dont know what else to say about this guy, its not usually the style I'm into, but this is well worth a listen

Stussy: Our Gang Series

This is kinda old news, but new to Australia. The Stussy "our gang" series is freakin ill. Its a tshirt series of a whole bunch of modern artists designing shirts as they interpret the concept in their own way. Their are 3 groups of gangs at the moment, the first included Reas, Delta, So Me, Morning Breath and Rob Abeyta, and were my favourites in the series.

DELTA
is one of the graffiti pioneers of Europe. Active since the eighties, he developed his own unique three-dimensional typographic style. As an artist, he grew from his experiences to look at and deal with the streets to a more reflective kind of work. His drawings, paintings, video work and installations breathe the ghost of the old utopists and constructivists, but of a time where the rotting process of the concrete is clearly visible. They could be seen as fingerprints or portraits of industrial architecture.

ROBERT ABEYTA JR.
is a full time designer and painter living in the Los Angeles area. Until recently, he was working with NIKE as Art Director on a new line of sneakers & apparel. His past works include collaborations with Spike Jonze, French Director and Academy Award Winner Michel Gondry, Stussy and Undefeated. Also numerous music packaging designs ranging from the seminal punk band LOS CRUDOS to The Transplants to LA hip hop legends Mack 10, Cypress Hill and DJ Quik. Other works include the design of numerous skateboards and apparel while working as an Art Director for Fourstar Clothing at the Girl Skateboard Companies.
MORNING BREATH
is Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto. In 1996, the two started working together at Think Skateboards in San Francisco. Doug and Jason found early on that they had similar tastes and influences, many of which were associated with the late '70s and early '80s; everything from sniffing glue and punk rock to racking paint and hip hop. Over the years, their creative collaborations continued to expand beyond skateboard graphics and they realized the need to create a formalized partnership. In 2002, the two founded Morning Breath, a creative studio located in Brooklyn, New York. Doug and Jason now split their creative energy and time between commercial and personal work. In 2006, their first book was published entitled The Early Bird: The Art and Design of Morning Breath.
TODD JAMES
is an internationally known artist and designer who spent the bulk of his childhood and adolescence watching cartoons, eating cereal and writing graffiti. Through his work on NYC's subway trains, as REAS, he mastered the practical challenges of good design at an early age. James' commercial works include logos for clients such as the Beastie Boys, The Source, Eminem, Mobb Deep and Redman. They remain some of rap music's most enduring icons. As the Puppet Designer and as a Production Designer on Comedy Central's hit show Crank Yankers, James' singular aesthetic sensibility was introduced to a television audience with great success. On the fine art side, work by James has been shown at the 2000 Venice Biennale, The Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Tate museum in Liverpool and at Deitch Projects in NYC as well as the Beautiful Losers museum tour. Most recently has been making paintings for his second show in Copenhagen at V1 Gallery and working on new projects for Adult Swim. James currently resides in New York, home base for his company, REAS International.
SO ME
is head of the graphic design department at Ed Banger records, one of the most exciting electronic labels in the galaxy. His hand written drawings, which mix retro typography and hip hop clichés, have traveled around the world. While Video Director for Justice (MTV Music Award for "best video" for D.A.N.C.E.) and Kanye West, Graphic Designer for the Japanese clothing brand Revolver, So Me has become the designer of the "French Touch" second generation.

Isaac Hayes RIP (August 20, 1942 -- August 10, 2008)

As u all may or may not be aware one of the worlds funk/soul greats Mr Isaac Hayes passed away on the weekend. Best known for his work on the all time movie hit 'Shaft', his sweet lovemaking voice was utilized in south park as the voice of chef.

One of my first five 45rpm vinyls was the theme song to shaft and I have had a special connection (in my pants) to Dr Hayes ever since, even though the 45 is scratched to the shithouse.

My 3 favourite tracks from the soundtrack were Shafts Cab Ride, Cafe Regios and Bumpys Lament,so here they are for your listening pleasure

Great Escape... not so great.

We were just sitting at tradehooks HQ, absentees and i having a quiet friday afternoon gin, whilst S is down at the snow trying to find some skinny boarding pants.. "Do these come fitted"... If your on the slopes this weekend and reading our RSS feed on your Iphone, say hi to the tall kid who can't really board, but is looking hell fressssh.

When up on the screen jumps someone claiming that Great Escape is finito. We didn't really believe it or care. But some of you might. My guess is that most readers would be going to parklife or carpark life. We plan to attend both.

"It is with considerable regret that we are announcing the cancellation of this year’s Great Escape Festival.

Unexpectedly low ticket sales have left festival organisers with no option but to cancel the event. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that have made the festival such a success in previous years. We’d also like to whole heartedly apologies to the bands, artists, agents, managers, suppliers, sponsors, media supporters and festival goers that have been let down by our decision. We thank you in advance for your understanding."

How could it be UNEXPECTED?? They were competing against 2many Dj's, Diplo, Dizzee and.... Miami Horror. Two festivals in Sydney in one weekend does not work.

Parklife 1

Great Escape 0

If you swap sex, for Great Escape and ben for anyone's name who was attending Great  Escape, it makes a funny song.

tradehooks attending:

Last time Van She played at the uni bar i could count the people on the dance floor with my fingers and toes. I thought to myself, these guys aren't getting the crowds they deserved and i couldn't figure out why. Then today it hit me, it was because their new album 'V' had not been released. derrr.

So i would encourage Wollongong to head out to Warrawong for the only reason anyone goes there, to go to JB Hifi and pickup Van She's album. You might even get a Tshirt.
Maybe while you're in Warrawong you could also do me a favor and stop by Westfield's and burn it down. thanks.

Here's is the first track off the album, also a recommended listening of mine is an unusual track called "Temps Mort".

Streets vs. Muse

+

=?
This track got "leaked" onto the net. Prolly leaked by a record company exec at a hell low bit rate to build up internet hype. Oh well.

Its a new collab between Mike Skinner (the Streets) and Muse, called Who Knows Who. Apparently Matt Bellamy from Muse wanted to create Britain's answer to Rage Against the Machine. Its ok. But its by no means RATM.

New Streets Track- The Escapist - New Album Due Mid September 2008

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Ever since i saw the Streets play at BDO Sydney a couple of years back, Mike Skinner has been my favourite Birmingham geezer. In fact in my top 5 musical minds.
His own brand of rap, telling stories with perfectly simple rhymes, but ingenious phrasings and metaphors. His albums are truly story books, each ones elaborating his life. No bling, no glocks, no grills, just 'a few herbs and a bit of Benson'

This new track Im guessing is from the forthcoming album, due to be released sometime in September this year. All recorded with a love band, practically in his or one of his mates houses.

Checkout their Myspace, and especially read his blog, its not as good as A-traks but bloody close. He also has a TV show called Beat Stevie. Its awesome

The Streets - Escapist

The Veronicas get nude for tradehooks?

Usually im a hater of the veronicas... but i can appreciate these alleged pieces of art.... Particularly the very "talented" Jess. The photo above has been confirmed as real. There is still some ambiguity concerning the below alt tits. At what point does it seem like a good idea to allow your boyfriend/girlfriend/mailman, to take photos of you nude, if you have any sort of fame.

Here are the alleged photos of Jess from the veronicas nips. Perfect Alt Tits?
